San Diego: South Moulton Company, 1923. First Edition. Format De Luxe Patron's Edition Limited #111 of 150 numbered copies SIGNED by the author, complete in 4 volumes. Illustrated by 30 photogravures, 120 full-page duotone plates and more than 1100 half-tone cuts of birds in life, nests, eggs, and favorite haunts, from photographs. Together with 44 drawings in the text and a series of 110 full-page color plates with printed tissue guards. Publisher's green morocco with multi-color bird onlays & gilt lettering on spines; top edge gilt; photographic endpapers. Wear to extremities; slight darkening to spines; some corners starting to show through leather; small stain on page 450 and the tissue guard but not the photogravure the tissue is protecting; small 1/4" adhesion in center between pages 428 & 429 preventing the pages from fully opening; else a near fine set. This is a heavy set and may require additional shipping. William Leon Dawson (1873-1928) was a celebrated ornithologist and oölogist (collector of bird eggs); his "Birds of California" is among the most definitive works relating to the birds of a specific state.

The Birds of California by William Leon Dawson, from 1923. 4 Volume Set. De Luxe edition, signed by the author. Set is ex-library and ex-libris. Former library book set, with stamps from Coleman College and Fransciscan Fathers California on copyright pages. Stamped Property of Coleman College on page edges. All volumes are liberally stamped Stolen Ex Libris D. B. Tracy, particularly on illustrations. Cover corners are worn and cover is scuffed, as might be expected from a library set. End papers are faded, particularly around edges. Text is very readable and illustrations are in great condition. Minimal aging on pages themselves. A couple of pages may be torn, at the binding; see image for example. Please contact me with questions about this set.

One of 539 sets, signed by the author (though not numbered and limitation leaf is blank but for the printed line bearing Dawson's signature). Collates correctly. Four large quarto volumes (12 1/4 x 9 3/8 inches; 311 x 240 mm.). Contemporary blue cloth with beveled edges and rounded corners, spines with gilt rules and lettering. Bibliographic offprint laid in. Some minor joint rubbing but a solid and clean set.This copy inscribed by the patron of this publication, Miss Ellen Browning Scripps: "Presented to Mr. Mi*** John Fillete (?) with appreciation of his life and work by E.B. Scripps, Christmas, 1929".
