About This Item
London: George Routledge and Sons, c1870. Leather. Very Good Indeed. 7.5" by 5". None. A collection of observant literary criticism essays, originally contributions to the North American Review. In a fine school prize binding of Edinburgh Institution, with school prize bookplate to front pastedown dated 1878. Faded binder's stamp of Mackenzie to front pastedown. William Hickling Prescott (May 4, 1796 January 29, 1859) was an American historian and Hispanist, who is widely recognized by historiographers to have been the first American scientific historian. Despite suffering from serious visual impairment, which at times prevented him from reading or writing for himself, Prescott became one of the most eminent historians of 19th century America. He is also noted for his eidetic memory. In the summer of 1845, a collection of articles Prescott had published in the North American Review were published as Biographical and Critical Miscellanies by Bentley in octavo, and an edition was also prepared simultaneously by Harper & Brothers in New York. In a decorative full calf school prize binding. Externally very good, just some shelfwear. Internally, firmly bound. Bright and clean throughout. Very Good Indeed
