About This Item

A TOUR THROUGH THE LOW COUNTRIES

[LOW COUNTRIES]. Billets in Low Countries, 1814 to 1817. In a Series of Letters, Embellished with Colored Plates. 8vo, full gilt bordered polished brown morcco, by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, inner gilt dentelles, marbled end papers, pp. 228, [2] ads + 4 colored plates (including frontispiece), t.e.g, uncut. London: Printed for J. J. Stockdale, 1818.

First Edition. The unsigned colored aquatints are attributed to George Cruikshank, although three of them in Cohn's copy were autographed by him as "Not by me GCk." They are possibly by Isaac Robert Cruikshank. The fourth is possibly his. An account of an interesting tour around the Low Countries at the end of the Napoleonic Wars. The color plates are of a Dutch peasant, a shrimp-catcher in swimming gear, a flying bride, and a Dutch minister exhorting his parishioners from his pulpit. The leaf of ads is misbound at the end instead of as pp. [11]-[12]. Minor offsetting from the plates, still a fine copy, scarce on the market. OCLC locates 10 copies in this country (NYPL; Stanford: UC-Irvine; Yale; Indiana; Boston Athenaeum; Harvard; Princeton; Rice; U. Texas), four in Holland, one in Belgium, one in Ireland (Nat. Lib.), and only one in the UK (Cambridge). Not in COPAC. Cohn 73.
