Biblj Ceská. [Bible in Czech]: 1577 Masterpiece of Czech Printing by Melantrich

  • Used

  • Hardcover

635, [19] leaves. Title page is lacking, and the title page and other leaves from Sebastian Münster's Kozmograffia Cžeská, 1554, are bound in its place. These are followed by Saint Jerome's prologue, A1-5, with A6 apparently missing. The Biblical text is nearly complete, beginning with B1, the opening of Genesis. The following leaves are lacking from the Bible text: Ccc5, Eee6, and U2, with U2 replaced by a bifolium from an earlier Bible by Melantrich. The apparatus following the text appears complete. Blind-tooled leather binding dated 1833. Contents show considerable wear, with repairs, soiling, some closely trimmed edges, etc.

First published in 1549 and intended for use by Ultraquists, Catholics and Lutherans alike, Melantrich's Bible is considered a masterpiece of Czech printing. It is primarily a translation of the Vulgate, with revisions to the New Testament based on the Greek. This is the fifth and final edition. The 100+ woodcuts first appeared in Melantrich's fourth Bible, 1570, and bear the monograms of two artists, Florian Abel of Cologne (F and FA), and Francesco Terzio, court painter to Archduke Ferdinand (FT). See Darlow and Moule, 2182.

Description:
Very Good 1714, Hamburg Germany. The first ever printing of this seminal classic. The first time that Bible stories were printed specifically for children. Thus it was somewhat "cleansed" before publication. One source I found says that the incest and murder committed by David were altered, among other things. It is four inches by seven inches, and includes 104 plates from engravings, 52 in the Old Testament, and 52 in the New Testament. There are 400 pages of text, plus the eight page introduction. Also, all the plates are on unnumbered pages, for a total of 512 printed pages. The book is in its original calves leather boards and spine, which are still attached but fragile. All pages, including all front and rear endpapers, are present. The last two plates have been repaired at the edges, and several pages inside have edge tears or stains, but they are minimal. There is the expected foxing throughout, and a former owner name and inscription in pencil at the front and a name alone in pencil at the… Read More

Late sixteenth (?) century leather; light scuffing, hinges cracked but cords holding tightly; insect damage to text block with loss of text throughout; margins in Orosius trimmed close, affecting title image. First printing of Erasmus' critical edition of Quintus Curtius. This first century Roman biography of Alexander the Great was an early Renaissance bestseller, with editions from at least a dozen printers throughout Europe by 1517. Erasmus brought it as reading material on a voyage to England in 1517, and finding the text incomplete and corrupt, he prepared his own critical edition. This was first published by his friend Strasbourg printer Matthias Schürer in 1518. Erasmus' version proved so popular that five more printers had issued their own editions of his text by 1541; these in turn were reprinted a total of five more times by 1575.
