About This Item
Paris, L. Guérin et Charles Robustel, 1715. Folio. (12) ff, 810 pp. Five engraved plates, two finely engraved headpieces, & several engravings in the text (some full-page). Half red calf binding, marbled boards. Binding very rubbed and top of spine damaged, but a lovely, clean, uncut copy of this very scarce catalogue.
First edition of this monumental catalogue of the collection of Greek manuscripts owned by Henri-Charles du Cambout de Coislin, bishop of Metz (1664 - 1732) and formed by his great grandfather Pierre Séguier, chancellor of France (1588 - 1682). Coislin commisioned Bernard de Montfaucon, founder of Greek paleography, to compile the catalogue, an extraordinary piece of scholarship. Archer Taylor says: "The manuscripts were given to the abbey of St. Germain des Prés in 1731 and are now in the Bibliothèque Nationale" (Book catalogues p. 237). [c.f.
