New York: Braziller, [1967] Bound in quarter vellum over red cloth boards, title in gilt on spine, and a twenty-four page introductory text in gray wrappers. . Two volumes, folio, including a complete facsimile of the Lorsch Gospels from the Biblioteca Documentara Batthyaneum in Alba Julia, Rumania and the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana in Rome. Both in fine condition in publisher's cloth slipcase. One of 1,000 copies. Includes six color engravings from photographs by Robert Braunmüller, and many color-printed plates, though most of the production consists of high-quality monochrome plates. After centuries of separation, the four parts which comprise the Lorsch Gospels were united in the Coronation Hall of the Holy Roman Empire in Aachen, Germany on the occasion of the 1965 exhibition of the Council of Europe "Charlemagne: His Achievements and Influence." The respective owners cooperated to photograph the entire manuscript and the ivory covers during the exhibition. Thus a foundation was laid for… Read More

Venice: Nicolaus Jenson, 1479. 318 x 229 mm. (12 1/2 x 9"). Double column, 51 lines of text plus headline, gothic type. Each leaf with two to four very attractive four-line illuminated initials in blue, green, magenta, orange, and burnished gold, some with gold bezant extensions. Occasional marginalia in a contemporary hand. Goff B-563; BMC V, 180. ◆Some trivial light foxing or faint dampstaining, but IN FINE CONDITION, the paper very fresh, and the illumination sparkling. These are beautifully illuminated leaves from the renowned Venetian printer Nicolaus Jenson. Born a Frenchman near Troyes, Jenson (1420-80) is known to have set up shop in Venice in 1470, and during a decade of labor, he probably issued in excess of 100 works. In addition to printing some of the most attractive books of the period, Jenson also had close working relationships with leading illuminators, who would enhance special copies of his works, as here, with glittering embellishments to appeal to a discriminating and wealthy… Read More

Description:
Perhaps France, mid-12th century. Each leaf measures approximately 370 x 240 mm. (14 1/2 x 9 1/2"). Double column, 32 lines in a fine proto-gothic hand. See: Thompson, "An Introduction to Greek and Latin Paleography," p. 436. ◆Recovered from a binding and thus with one side of each leaf somewhat browned, soiled and with a few creases, one leaf with several small blotches of red paint in the text (not affecting overall legibility), one corner of each leaf torn away, affecting running title and one to two lines of text, other trivial defects, but still very nice specimens with clear and legible script, and one side of each leaf quite clean and well preserved. Once part of a large and elegant Romanesque Bible, these leaves are excellent examples of a high quality proto-gothic book hand. Sometimes referred to as "praegothica" or "late Caroline," the proto-gothic script is characterized by letterforms that are more or less unchanged from Caroline minuscule, but with a number of traits starting to show… Read More

Running titles and chapter numbers in red and blue, one three-line initial in blue with white tracery, filled with curling pink vines on burnished gold ground, the initial with a long descender and extensions running the entire length of the column, painted pink and blue with gold bezants and gold ivy leaves sprouting into the margins, both ends terminating in sprays of painted and gold ivy and bezants. Remnants of mounting tape on recto fore edge. ◆Vellum with a little wrinkling around the edges, top edge with a couple of very small stains, but AN EXTREMELY FINE LEAF, clean and bright with wide margins and finely preserved decoration. Given the impressive size and beauty of this leaf, we can confidently assume that the Bible from which it came was commissioned by a person or ecclesiastical institution of considerable wealth and importance.
