The author, Mark Odom Hatfield (July 12, 1922 – August 7, 2011), was a popular American teacher at his Alma Mater (Willamette University) before becoming a life-long politician, a two-term Governor of the State of Oregon and a U.S. Senator in the Republican party alongside Robert (Bob) Packwood. Born in Dallas, Oregon, he served in the United States Navy in the Pacific Theater during W.W.I.I. after graduating from Willamette University; he later attended and graduated from Stanford University.
