Wagner was born in Philadelphia, PA. on November 15, 1906. He completed his education in Cleveland, Ohio, where his newspaper career began in 1924. While a reporter on the Cleveland Press, he worked with the late Harry Houdini on the latter's expose of spiritualist frauds and charlatan seers. Following his work on the Houdini story, he began a series of personal investigations aimed at the preparation of an expose of astrology. He learned to calculate his own horoscope and that of others and tested the various theories of the ancients regarding the influence of stars upon the earth and man. He aimed to scoff but came to respect the subject of his investigations.
