About This Item
London: Richard Bentley, 1861. First Edition thus; there was an earlier compilation from Bentley’s Miscellany with different contents. Among the authors represented are Longfellow, Ingoldsby, Heine, “The Irish Whiskey-Drinker,” Mary Russell Mitford and many others. A brilliant copy in publisher’s cloth; aside from a little foxing of the top edge and minute rubbing, the book appears nearly as it must have when new. The spine and front cover are decorated with gilt whimsical characters, apparently after or by Cruikshank, who designed the vignette title page.
