Description:
New York: George Braziller, 1957. Cloth, 139 pages, illustrations (some colour); 29 cm. Firm binding, clean inside copy. Age toning. Dust jacket toned, with light shelfwear, protected in a mylar cover. OVERSIZE! No priority/international, except by special arrangement. Ben Shahn started out as a Social Realist in the first half of the century, then veered more towards Judaica, allegorical compositions, and commercial work as he had to tamper down his political concerns during the McCarthy period, when he was targeted by right-wingers for his liberal-leftist politics (notably his support for the anarchists Sacco & Vanzetti). Probably better known for his graphic work than as a painter.. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 4to.

Description:
New York: George Braziller, 1963. Hardcover. 4to. 142 pages. Illustrated. SUBJECT (S) : Shahn, Ben, 1898-1969. Edgeworn dustjacket, yellowed spine. Shahn (1898-1969) , an American artist, was born in Lithuania. He worked with Diego Rivera, painting the controversial "Man at the Crossroads" fresco for Rockefeller Center, which is now in Mexico City. He painted other public pieces for the government during the Depression, and designed posters for the Office of War Information during WWII. Much of his artwork used Jewish images and the Hebrew alphabet. "Shahn raised the aesthetic level of graphic art in the United States. As a draftsman, he was often a commentator on the social scene, always outraged at injustice, but also amused by humanity's foibles and weakness. "(Werner, EJ) Ex library, very good condition.
