About This Item

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company,, 1968. First edition, first printing, of the author's debut novel. While the Ghanaian author published short stories and essays, it is his novels that have built his reputation and have "been central in the shaping of the canon of African literature" (Gikandi). Octavo. Original black boards, spine lettered in gilt, black roundel to front with gilt floral vignette, blue endpapers. With dust jacket. Neat ink ownership inscription to front free endpaper. Spine ends and head of rear board bumped, tips a touch bumped, extremities a little rubbed, a few pencil notations to rear endpapers, else internally fresh and free from foxing, in the bright, unclipped jacket, chip to head of spine, extremities a little creased, occasional short closed tear to folds and extremities. A very good copy. Simon Gikandi, Encyclopedia of African Literature, Routledge, 2002, pp. 38-40.
