About This Item

Philadelphia, PA: Turner Brothers & Co.. Very Good+. 1869. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. This book is in Very Good+ condition and was likely issued without a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in generally clean, bright condition. There is some light bumping and rubbing to the spine ends, corners and spine joints of the book covers, along some beginning fraying to the top spine end. The text pages are clean and bright. There is some begining pulling to a couple of signatures. The author, Joseph Warren Watson apparently died very early in life, at age 23, after starting a promising career as a poet, writing and publishing poems in several regional magazines. Here's a portion of his obituary: "Though he loved to communicate brief catches of poetry to contribute to the amusement of gay and festive circles, he rarely entered them himself, but seemed to live as if profoundly conscious of his early death. He died after a lingering illness of that fell destroyer of so many bight ambitious, and beautiful youths - consumption." (from Wikipedia) Walt Whitman, at some point, read and admired Watson's most famous poem, Beautiful Snow, and circulated copies within his followers. .
