Of All of the cousins Truman lived with as a child, Lucille Faulk Ingram & her daughter were his closest kin. As a fledgling writer looking for solitude, it was in the comfort of Lucille Ingram's home that Truman began to write his first novel, Other Voices, Other Rooms.

Not the 1st edition to be sure but an early edition using the Scribner's sheets, with an undated A. L. Burt title page [possibly a cancel]. Bruccoli A.8.1.e., the 5th printing, describes a dated 1924 title page, making no mention of an undated TP but for all intents & purposes, this copy appears to be the same. 8vo., 449pp., dark green cloth, lettered in gilt; A near fine or better sharp copy, stamped in gilt on the spine & upper cover. In a flawed but lovely bright original dustwrapper lacking about 3" of the bottom spine panel. Quite nice. Rare signed. The Beautiful and Damned brought Fitzgerald accolades from those whose opinions he valued. Mencken congratulated him for staking out new ground. Fitzgerald was aiming high; he only wanted to be the best novelist of his generation* (Turnbull, 130-3 1). Fitzgerald wrote to Zelda in 1930, *I wish The Beautiful and Damned had been a maturely written book because it was all true. We ruined ourselves. Humes's second novel, following 'The Underground City,' both of which led to his being considered by Esquire magazine as having the same promise as two obscure guys named Updike and Styron (whoever they are). Anyway, he met a guy named Leary who introduced him to a little substance known as LSD, and after seriously indulging his fondness for the hallucinogen he became a trifle paranoid and a bit delusional, which pretty much ended his writing career. Humes was co-founder (with Peter Matthiessen and George Plimpton) of The Paris Review. He died of prostate cancer in 1992. Black cloth w/gilt lettering, 184 pages.
