Boston: Crosby, Nicols & Co, 1856. First Edition. 12mo. Chromolithographic color frontispiece, and 5 other color plates, 251 pages. One of the most successful authors of popular German tales of how virtue and honor saved the hero from disaster (see the Oxford Encyclopedia of Children's Literature). Bound in original red pictorial gilt cloth decorated in blind pictorial spine gilt, pale yellow endpapers, light wear to spine ends and corners, second blank page brown, previous owner's names in pencil, early gift inscription in ink. A very good copy with some lightly scattered foxing.
