About This Item

New York: Fords, Howard, and Hulbert, 1883. Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket. 0x0x0. U.S. Secretary of State Robert Lansing's copy, with his bookplate on endpapers, and ink name and date on front flyleaf of each volume (these were purchased from a family library in Henderson Harbor, NY, near his birthplace in Watertown, which included many other works owned by him). Spines toned and drying with minor loss, edges rubbed with minor leather loss (except for one large surface chip from rear corner of volume V). 1883 Hard Cover. Original half-leather, leather spine and corners over marbled boards, marbled edges and endpapers, gilt titles and decorations. This set, based on historical lectures given by John Lord, was published in various forms. The two volumes of the 'first series' (not included here) deal with pagan and Jewish traditions. These five volumes represent volumes one through five of what would become a larger set of thirteen, which also comprised an index of the full work, so the most complete editions of this are in fifteen volumes. Most notable is the volume on important women in history, which discusses significant women from Cleopatra to George Eliot. Includes: Antiquity; The Middle Ages; Renaissance and Reformation; Warriors and Statesmen; Great Women.
