About This Item

New York: Harcourt, Inc. - Harvest Book, 2002. First U.S. Edition Stated . Hard Back. Very Good/Very Good. 5 1/2" X 8 1/4. 522 pages. Has one inch round light stain on front endpaper that penetrates the first title page and barely perceptible on the second title, and copyright pages. The remainder of the interior is faultless. It is April 1204 and Constantinople, the splendid capital of the Byzantine Empire is being sacked and burned by the knights of the Fourth Crusade. Amid the carnage and confusion, one Baudolino saves a historian and high court official from certain death at the hands of the crusading warriors and proceeds to tell his own magical story. Born a simple peasant in northern Italy, Baudolino has two major gifts, a talent for learning languages and a skill in telling lies. When still a boy he meets a foreign commander in the word, charming him with his quick wit and lively mind. The Commander is in fat Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, adopts Baudolino and sends him to the university in Paris.

Synopsis

Baudolino is a 2000 novel by Umberto Eco about the adventures of a young man named Baudolino in the known and mythical Christian world of the 12th century. Baudolino was translated into English in 2001 by William Weaver. The novel presented a number of particular difficulties in translation, not the least of which is that there are ten or so pages written in a made-up language that is a mixture of Latin, medieval Italian, and other languages.
