About This Item

[Carmel CA]: Seay's Civil War Battlemaps, 1990. Mylar sheets. Fourteen 18 1/4" x 17 3/4" heavy mylar sheets, consisting of 13 transparent sheets and 1 opaque sheet in Fine condition.

On one side of the opaque sheet is presented the general political and military setting of the times, the reasons the battle was fought, a map of the area and a description of the battlefield; the verso is a map of the battlefield itself with relevant roads and features, including topographic contours, which serve to describe the terrain, and a map key.

Each of the 13 clear sheets presents a chronological snapshot of a specific time during the 2-day battle, capturing the positions of each of the 74 brigades involved (in the early stages not all units of either side were present on the field; in such cases their position off the field is indicated by appropriate legends). Each sheet also contain prose descriptions of the actions taking place at the time. The sheets, in proper chronological order, are joined to the battlefield map sheet by an openable ring. This creative visual presentation allows the the viewer to observe the battle as it unfolds, following the various units as they enter and move on the battlefield and, ultimately, see the Union forces retreat north toward Chattanooga. The text on each sheet describes the action pictured for the viewer.

With 16,170 Union and 18,454 Confederate casualties, the Battle of Chickamauga was one of the costliest battles of the Civil War (second only to Gettysburg) and by far the deadliest battle and the largest Confederate victory in the Western theater.
