First edition. *The Battle of Dakar, in September 1940, was an unsuccessful attempt by Allied forces to capture the strategic port of Dakar in French West Africa. The hope was to overthrow the colony's pro-German Vichy French administration and replace it with a pro-British Free French one under General Charles de Gaulle.
