About This Item

New York: Philosophical Library, 1955. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. Xiii, 142 Pp. Grey Cloth Stamped In Black. Apparent First Printing, With Large Catalog Pf "Midcentury Reference Library With Available And Forthcoming Titles (On Back Panel Of Dust Jacket.). Book Very Near Fine, Bright And Clean, Slight Foxing To Gutter Edges Of Pastedowns, No Marks. Dust Jacket With Light Wear. It Is Clear How Extensive And Modern Were Many Of Spinoza's Ideas About Government, Although The Book Does Not Discuss Whether Spinoza Was Read By Anyone In Pre-Revolutionary America Or Whther Those Ideas Influenced The Thoughts Of Any Revolutionists Or Anyone In The Constitutional Convention. There Were Also Advanced Thinkers And Writers On Government For Hundreds Of Year I Other Countries As Well, Whose Writings May Have Been Read By Ancestors Of The Revolutionists Or Their Teachers Or Clergymen And Thus Whose Ideas May In Tin Fragments Have Been Passed Down To Those Evolutionists. The Evidence For This Will Always Be Extremely Hazy As There Are Few Traces Of Any Kind Of Pre-Revolutionary American Personal Libraries.
