About This Item

Printed for Francis Gosling,, 1741.. 1741 Folio. [2], 292, [28] p. Engraved headpieces and decorative initials. Second edition. Recent half calf with marbled boards. Spine with raised bands and a contrasting label. Contents clean and crisp with good margins. Published posthumously, the first edition appeared in 1736. ESTC T97066. 'Madox was the author of four works of historical scholarship, the first two of which stand among the major achievements of English antiquarianism up to that time. In the company of like-minded antiquaries such as Thomas Hearne, Humfrey Wanley, and Thomas Rymer, Madox pioneered the accurate diplomatic editing of medieval sources along principles established by the great French scholar Jean Mabillon. His work is significant both for its lasting usefulness to three subsequent centuries of medieval scholarship and for its clear recognition of the primacy of original government records, reproduced with painstaking accuracy.'
