About This Item
Vinita, Indian Territory: Chieftain Print Book. Good. Soft cover. 8vo. 8pp pamphlet, BAPTISM - THE MODE, by Rev. John Edwards, Vinita, Indian Territory: Chieftain Print, no date, circa 1890, paper toned and brittle and prone to chipping, please exercise care when handling, a few archival repairs are noted along front edge of some pages, overall very clean and bright. This is a very scarce Cherokee language imprint from Vinita, Indian Territory, which was later Oklahoma. The Reverend Chamberlin went to Pheasant Hill mission, in what is now Craig County, Oklahoma, in 1868, several years before Vinita came into existence. He printed his own translations of religious matter and distributed them among the Native Americans as part of his missionary work for the Presbyterian Church. The Chieftain Newspaper began around 1882. See Hargrett's Oklahoma Imprints #704. Very Scarce.
