New York: Knopf, 1956. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. First edition. Warm, 5-line inscription signed "Mark" and dated at San Francisco 2-20-56 on the dedication page. Hardcover in brick colored paper covered boards over green cloth spine. 243 pp. Near fine, spine lettering a trifle dulled and minor wear at the tips. In first issue dust jacket with three "Advance Comments" on the rear panel, front panel has backgrounds of the tille in blue, red and black, price of $3.50 intact. Jacket has some darkening to the spine strip, shallow wear at the spine ends and some rubbing along the folds. Not only a high spot in baseball books but also in late 20th century American fiction, a novel about a brash young ballplayer and his doomed teammate. Basis for the acclaimed 1973 film starring Robert DeNiro as the tragic catcher Bruce Pearson and Michael Moriarty as Henry "Author" Wiggin.
