About This Item
477-496 pages with map. Royal octavo (9 3/4" x 6 1/4") loose pages from "Man" volume 14, number 3. First edition. Banditry has generally been explained as the response of peasant communities without specialized political organization to economic disruption. This article examines the changing application of the term "banditry" in Sardinia since the nineteenth century and considers the national and local contexts of its use. The development of the idea of cultural difference which underlies "banditry" is connected to the transformation of social relationships and controls among pastorialists and to the establishment of a systematic set of exchanges, livestock-rustling, between tow populations. Livestock-rustling itself is analysed as an activity which mediates opposed values yet keeps them distinct. Condition: Loose pages from Man.
