Indonesia, c. 16th century. Rare Balinese palm leaf manuscript. Eight leaves, inscribed on both sides in Hindu text manuscript, binding thread intact. In near fine condition. The oldest surviving palm leaf manuscripts date back to the 5th century BCE and have been found in Nepal, Tibet and central Asia. Used as writing materials in the Indian subcontinent of Asia, the manuscripts were created to copy and preserve classical Hindu and Sudanese scriptural texts.
