What life and history has really been like in Montana and the Dakotas - part of America's great west and now "fly-over country." With razor-sharp acuity and wit Raban makes clear that our notion of the West as a realm of settled communities peopled by farmers and small-town merchants has always been more imaginary than real. His portrait of this least known region of the U.S. strip away the myth--while preserving the romance--that ha shrouded our understanding of it. A moving journey into to forlorn soul of our heartland..
