About This Item

Ginn and Company, 1926. first edition. hardcover. very good: wear to boards and spine, spine slightly sunned, name on FFEP, toning, a few pencil marks in margins, binding tight./no DJ. 8vo 329pp. from Preface: "This volume is not written to prove a theory. I have merely tried to provide a helpful guidebook for the better understanding of the writers of modern France and of the civilization to which they belong. Histories of French literature, to the number of which I have myself contributed, are not entirely sufficient for the foreigner, who is often at sea as to political, religious, and social conditions. I have therefore endeavored to sketch the background of French literature during the period from 1789 to 1914, and to show both how it explains that literature and how literary works throw light upon it."
