London: George Routledge and Sons, 1877. Pictorial Boards. Fair. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Walter Crane. Engraved and Printed in Colours By Edmund Evans. 1877Not dated, c.1879 Gift inscription to front end-paper is dated Xmas 1879. Size square 12mo, 56 pages. Brown pictorial boards with brown cloth spine section. Condition fair. Covers corners and edges are rubbed and corners rubbed through to the card, the hinges have cracked completely being held together by the cloth spine webbing, the pages are chipped at the edges, preliminary and last pages with small spots, a few light spots to the internal pages here and there but they are generally pretty clean and bright throughout, there is a beautiful copperplate gift inscription dated 1879 to the front free end-paper. To the front cover are gold titles and frame and within the frame gold and black illustration of Hey Diddle Diddle the Cat and the Fiddle. To the rear cover is a gold frame embellished with laurel leaves and babies' faces and within is an illustration of the musical score from Hey Diddle Diddle being held in the beak of a stork wearing a dinner jacket being watched by a little girl and boy also in formal evening wear. Very dark green paste-downs and end-papers. Half-title, extra end-paper with cat and fiddle vignette, frontispiece illustration of Old King Cole, highly decorative title page. The pages are all very decorative and beautifully illustrated. For each nursery rhyme the musical score with the words underneath is printed to the left hand page, within hightly decorative and illustrated border, and the right hand page opposite has a full page illustration of the nursery rhyme.
