About This Item
London: Macmillan and Co., 1906. xii, 563pp, [1]. With numerous illustrations by the author in the text. Title in red and black. Handsomely bound in contemporary brown crushed morocco, lettered in gilt to spine, A.E.G. A trifle rubbed, spine sunned. Marbled endpapers, gilt dentelles, contemporary inked gift inscription to front blank fly-leaf. A handsomely bound copy of an early edition of William Schwenck Gilbert's (1836-1911) illustrated burlesque playlets, which are in actuality shrewd reviews of contemporary plays. The first collection of The âBabâ Ballads was issued by John Camden Hotten in 1869; a lack of commercial support by the publisher led Gilbert to turn to George Routledge & Sons, who published successive collections of the ballads until the end of the century, after which Macmillan took them over. . 8vo.

Concentrating on hand-press printing and early modern manuscripts, we pride ourselves on offering a varied selection of antiquarian works on a diverse range of subjects, leaning towards the interesting, the important, and the unusual.

We also offer a valuation service (for either insurance or probate purposes), as well as advice on library development.
