About This Item

100th Thousand, Illustrated with black & white photographs and drawings

The hardbound cloth brown boards of this book are cosmetically worn and stained, the debossed title and bee decoration are no longer visible, and there is some warping to the rear board, but structurally it is still extremely solid. There is no wear along the top and bottom of the back strip or boards, and the corners remain sharp with minimal bumping. There is a small tear along the gutter of the rear board. in protecting the text block. Spine has a very slight slant with a gap to the green flower endpapers but the hinges are strong with the string binding tight. Text block solid and all pages firmly attached. Age tanning and foxing throughout. Previous owner name on front free endpaper. All interior pages are clean with no tears, cracks, or other previous owner marks. See detailed description. 490 pages plus advertisements. Dimensions: H – 9-3/4" W – 6-1/2"

First published in 1877, and still in print today under the title "ABC XYZ of Bee Culture", after twenty-five years in publication, it devolved to the authors son E. R Root, to continue with updates to this popular book. "The 1905 edition especially has had an exceptionally large list of entirely new subject added. Some of these relate to methods of management; some to new devices, and others to honey-plants that are commercially important, particularly those of the South and West Indies." The first five pages of the book include black and white photographs of the A. I. Roots factory operations. As the title states the contents begin with the letter "A", proceeds to the letter "W" and includes a Glossary, Biographies of Noted Bee-Keepers, A B C Picture Gallery of Apiaries & Bee-exhibits (black & white photographs), index and six pages of advertisements.

Amos Ives Root (1939 – 1923) was an early innovator in techniques for beekeeping during the late 19th century, when the practice played an important role in the economy of many communities in the U.S. The company he founded in 1869 in Medina, Ohio is still in business today. While it began as a manufacturer of beehives and beekeeping equipment in 1928 the company began a transition to candle-making which continues today.
