Developed during World War II by Boeing, this American superbomber could carry a much heavier load and fly over greater distances than any aircraft then in existence. This feature became particularly important during the Pacific War, when American aircraft had to fly well over a thousand miles and back to devastate the Home Islands of Japan. The apotheosis of the Superfortress came when it was chosen to carry the atomic bombs dropped over Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. In later versions it was used by the Americans during the Korean War with great effect.
