About This Item
London: Ward, Lock and Co., Limited, 1905. First edition. Cloth. Good. 8" by 5". Not Stated. A first edition of this illustrated gothic fantasy novel from popular Victorian author H. Rider Haggard. First edition. Illustrated with a frontispiece and thirty-one plates. Collated complete. In the sequel to Haggard's extremely popular novel, She, the reader is plunged into a story set in Tibet after Horace Holly encounters a manuscript containing a second memoir about Ayesha. Written by Sir Henry Rider Haggard, an English writer of adventure fiction romances set in exotic locations and a pioneer of the lost world literary genre. There are several variants to the first edition in terms of binding. With the following misprints as per the first edition: p.49 - "Khublighan" for "Khubilghan." p.207 - "heirophant" for "hierophant." As cited from "A Bibliography of the Works of Sir Henry Rider Haggard 1856-1925" by J. E. Scott. In the original blue cloth binding. Externally, smart with light bumping to the extremities and fading to the spine. The odd small mark to the boards. Rear hinge starting but firm. Lacking front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting. Two 1" closed tears to pages between the frontispiece and the contents page. Good
