About This Item
New York: Warwick Spencer Steel Company, 1944. First edition. Wraps. Fine. 12mo oblong, 14 by 19 cm. Unpaginated, 48 pages, including wraps, with 22 of these pages highly original anti-Nazi caricatures by Atzybasheff. The illustrations generally personify machines and equipment in a crazed, whimsical take on Futurist aesthetics. The idiosyncratic machines are shown humbling, crumbling and pulverizing Hitler, Tojo, Mussolini and the Axis in general. The machines can be tanks, robots, earthmovers and planes. In one illustration, instead of machines there are marching chickens, insect Nazis, etc. As the publication was put out by a steel company, the underlying message was to call attention to the crucial role the industry was playing in the Allied war effort at the time. Artzybasheff's arresting imagery, though, transcends the promotional message, and also, there is a cumulative strength to his illustrations. And paintings, notwithstanding their serious purpose, are sheer fun. A fine copy of an uncommon work.
