A Well-Worn Early American Edition, Inscribed By The American Explorer William Clark (1770-1838) Of The Lewis And Clark Expedition. Elaborate Characteristic Large Signature Of Clark, Signed As "W. Clark For (Recipient's Name Is Unclear, Appearing To Begin With An O, And Could Be An Indian Name) May 24Th 1837" On Front Pastedown; "W" And "William" In Large Letters On Front Free Endpaper; "Price $1 - 25 / 2 Copies 25 / 1 -50 Cts" On Rear Free Endpaper And Again On Rear Pastedown, "Do Not (?) William Clark" Printed On Foredge Of Page Block, "No Admittance In This Drawer" On Top Edge Of Page Block, And "Do Not Steal This Book My (Asonoit?) Friends" On Bottom Edge Of Page Block; And A Lot Of As Yet Undeciphered Faint Writing On Front And Rear Leather Covers, In Ink And In Blind, And Probably Also With A Drawing. The Signature Is With The Very Elaborate "W" Common In The Signature Of Clark; The Jottings On The Rear Endpapers Appear To Be In The Same Hand; The Hand Lettering On The Edges Of The Page Block Is Printed In Large Double Line Capitals And Cannot Be Attributed. (There Is Also A Signature, In Another Hand, Of "John H. Mclain" Dated November 1St, 1837, On The Second Front Endpaper). Aworn Copy Externally, Spine Partially Worn Away, One New Cord, Conditioned And Furbished, But Very Good Internally.
