"The nostalgic tone, simple style, and natural and domestic scenes of Ingelow's poetry connect it with Wordsworth's. Her lyrics also resonate with those of her Lincolnshire countryman Alfred Tennyson, who reportedly proclaimed to Ingelow on one occasion, 'Miss Ingelow, I do declare you do the trick better than I do'...Ingelow's work compares favourably, too, with that of Christina Rossetti, who in 1863 wrote to her publisher, 'Miss Ingelow ... would be a formidable rival to most men, and to any woman'" (ONDB). From the collection of Otto O. Fisher
