by DE QUINCEY, THOMAS (1785-1859; Author of “Confessions of an Opium Eater”):

Written on both sides of a single leaf cut from the middle of a larger sheet, the text commences on one side, “of the case, and would have been executed in a summary way, upon the prima facie evidence against him, that he did not appear to be in the condition of a prisoner; and, if his name had ever again reached his country, it would have been in some sad list of ruffians, murderers, traitors to their country…………” and finishes, “……roused from their slumbers by the glare of conflagration, reflected from gleaming cutlasses and from the faces of demons. This fear it was--a fear like this, as I have often thought…” The second side commences, “I have said that he would not have appeared to any capturing ship as standing in the situation of prisoner amongst the pirates, nor was he such in the sense of being confined. He moved about, when on board ship, in freedom……………” and finishes, “… Much, therefore, it was that he owed to this accomplishment. Still, there is no good thing without its alloy; and this great blessing brought along with it something worse than a dull duty - the necessity, in fact, of facing fears and trials to which the sailor's heart is preeminently…”Both the above forming part of Chapter XII, “My Brother” of “Autobiographic Sketches” first published in 1853. Approximately 500 words with much crossing out, alterations and revisions. The leaf 4 x 7½ inches.

Description:
Quarto. The collection contains 125 pieces of original correspondence including both TLS (Typed Letters Signed) and ((LS) Letters Signed. What began as a small electrical shop for the repair and manufacture of telephone equipment in 1884 as the north Electric Works grew to become the North Electric Company in 1889. By the early 20th Century the company became one of the most prominent manufacturing business in Ohio employing over 300 workers. After being in business for over a century, the business first was taken over by Ericsson and the by IYTY. These letters pertain to the problems stemming from a patent for the automatic ringing mechanism, switch boards and operators as well as dealing with their manufacture under Canadian Parents which became know as the Telechronometer Co. The big change ended the flat-rate system and introduced meters which could measure the length of calls and, of course, increase the cost to the consumer. For the next sixty years, the telephone company became a monopoly… Read More

Hardcover. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. 170 page manuscript. Contemporary half speckled sheep, marbled sides. Several contemporary sheets of manuscript with mathematical notations loosely inserted. Corners repaired, a little wear and some discolouration to boards, endpapers tanned, contents with the occasional light spot but overall quite clean. Very good condition. An elegant, substantial early-19th century manuscript containing practical mathematical and astronomical problems likely produced by a student of navigation. The majority of the text is from John Bonnycastle''s A Treatise on Plane and Spherical Trigonometry, originally published in 1806. Bonnycastle was a respected mathematics teacher who tutored the children of the aristocracy and taught at the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich. A man of "considerable classical and general literary culture", he was a great friend of Fuseli and also of Leigh Hunt, who included Bonnycastle in his book Lord Byron and Some of His Contemporaries.… Read More

Description:
Durham, England, 1681; Final concord Latin indenture in highly mannered Gothic style, executed at the court of Durham during the reign of Charles II on the 26th day of May in the year 1681 before three identified justices and the Mayor of the City Of Durham. Plaintiff is John Garstell, deforciants are Mary Hopper and Anthony Craggs and wife Amice. At issue is a tenement comprised of messuage, an orchard, twenty acres of land, twenty acres of meadow, and twenty acres of pasture, together with all goods and appurtenances, at Wiserley, Weardale township, in the parish of Wolsingham, County Durham. A sum of 160 silver marks was paid, suggesting this property was almost certainly a freehold. Indeed the names of John Gastell, Anthony Craggs and John Hopper appear as Wolsingham freeholders for 1685 in H. Conyers Surtees’ "History Of The Parish Of Wolsingham." Freeholds in Wolsingham were scarce, as the vast majority of lands were retained by the See of the Bishop of Durham. Manuscript… Read More

The earliest items here are a photo dated 1926 and a flyer from 1928, and the latest seems to be 1972 on a large poster from Girvan. New York: Workers Party, 1940. Mimeographed sheets, stapled at left, 8.5 x 11 inches, 8 pp. Pencil marginalia and minor toning to sheets.. Original mimeograph sheets containing James Burnham's (1905-1987) resignation from the Workers Party together with a response from the Party's Political Committee. The Workers Party was born out of prolonged factional infighting within the Socialist Workers Party (SWP), and was organized in 1940 when Burnham, Max Shachtman, and other Trotskyists (estimated at forty percent of the SWP membership) resigned from the SWP in opposition to the Soviet invasion of Finland and the USSR's direction under Stalin. Although Burnham supported the split, his alliance with Trotsky and Trotskyism, which dated back to the early 1930s, was in its final stage. Throughout his years as a Trotskyist, Burnham had sought to formulate an "American approach" to Marxism capable of addressing American, as opposed to European, causes and concerns. His youthful alignment with the Marxist… Read More

1905. Good +. Signed 3-page typescript of a agreement of sale between the American Baptist Publication Society and John Wanamaker. The American Baptist Publication Society sold to John Wanamaker the Crozier Building at 1420 and 1422 Chestnut St., Philadelphia, for $900,000. The Crozier Building has continued to function as a successful office building to this day.
