Florence's father, Arthur Holbrook (1842-1917) was the author of With the Fifth Wisconsin at Williamsburg. During the Civil War, Dr. Arthur Holbrook, D.D.S., enlisted in Co F, 5th Wisconsin Infantry. At first a Sergeant, he later became 1st Lieutenant and belonged to Co. A, 28th Wisconsin Infantry. Still later he was Adjutant of the 39 Wisconsin Infantry. Brigadier General Charles King served in the Wisconsin National Guard from 1882 until 1897, becoming Adjutant General in 1895. In 1898, he was appointed brigadier general of volunteers and sailed to the Philippines during the Spanish–American War. Collis, a colonel with the 114th Pennsylvania Infantry, published this collection of documents regarding the character of one Frederick Fernandez Cavada (1832-71) to protest Cavada's appointment as United States Consul at Trinidad de Cuba. Cavada was cashiered for "behav[ing] himself in a cowardly manner in the presence of the enemy, by absenting himself from the battle-field" at Fredericksburg, but was reinstated. Cavada displayed similar cowardice at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, but resigned before he could be tried. The books were one of the items sold at annual bazaars that were major fundraisers for the Boston Female Anti-Slavery Society, This volume contains writings by William Lloyd Garrison, John Quincy Adams, Edmund Quincy, James Russell Lowell, Maria Lowell, Edmund Jackson, Wendell Phillips, David Lee Child, Joseph Mazzini, and many others. Otherwise, the gilt on the front panel and spine is all present and bright. No wear to cloth or boards at the heel of both covers. Sharp corners. Now housed in an acid free document bag for storage. Mailed boxed, and I can have it in the mail tomorrow.
