[[Slavery] [African American] Thomas Taylor. Autograph Letter, Signed. [Columbus, Texas?]: January 7, 1861. Handwritten letter on gray lined paper. 20 x 23 cm. Discoloration and small splits at old folds. Writing is legible.
Mr. Taylor writes to a friend passing on word that "Mr. Shropshire requested me to let you know that he wishes the negro hire settled." Says Mr. Shropshire will be here a few days and mentions he may be in Lagrange today. There is a town named La Grange in Texas and there was a prominent slave and plantation owner named Shropshire in nearby Columbus, Texas. John Samuel Shropshire moved to Texas in 1854 and settled in Columbus, Colorado County. In 1860 Shropshire owned sixty-one slaves and operated a 750-acre plantation. - Handbook of Texas. It was common for slavers to hire out the enslaved persons, as shown in this letter on the eve of the Civil War.-

Description:
Philadelphia: King & Baird, 1866. Paperback. Small 4to. Stiff tan wrappers. 14pp. Very good. Bit of soiling to outer wrappers, else tight and nice. Collis, a colonel with the 114th Pennsylvania Infantry, published this collection of documents regarding the character of one Frederick Fernandez Cavada (1832-71) to protest Cavada's appointment as United States Consul at Trinidad de Cuba. Cavada was cashiered for "behav[ing] himself in a cowardly manner in the presence of the enemy, by absenting himself from the battle-field" at Fredericksburg, but was reinstated. Cavada displayed similar cowardice at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, but resigned before he could be tried. Whether the publication of Collis's pamphlet affected Cavada's Consul appointment we have not been able to determine. Most unusual. First edition. DORNBUSCH I, P 275A. SABIN 14457.
