1872. Elmira [NY], Apl. 19 [1872]." One side of a sheet of lined paper, with "Saml. Clemens | Elmira | April 19/72" written (by the recipient?) on the verso. The text of this early letter reads: What is your _new_ number? I only know 149 Asylum. Wm. C. Smythe (whose letter I enclose) [not included] is a splendid old friend of mine. He is city editor of the principal Pittsburgh paper -- a city _where I drew the largest audience ever assembled in Pittsburgh to hear a lecture._ Send him a book. I want a _big_ sale in Pittsburgh. _Mark_ Francis Edward Bliss (1843-1915) was the son of Elisha Bliss, who had founded the American Publishing Company in Hartford; "Frank" left a banking career to join his father's company in the 1860s, and was soon Treasurer. In 1867 Elisha had gotten in touch with fledgling newspaper journalist "Mark Twain," and by the time of this April 1872 letter, APC had published Twain's THE INNOCENTS ABROAD (1869), and (in February 1872) ROUGHING IT; it would soon publish THE GILDED AGE… Read More

An Autograph Letter Signed (ALS) by Samuel Clemens regarding his nephew Samuel E. Moffett (1860–1908), with fascinating personal content and notable associations, to Colonel George Brinton McClellan Harvey (1864-1928).
ALS. 2pp. in black ink on a folded sheet of notepaper, dated Feb. 22 with no year present, but circa 1899 (the year that Colonel Harvey acquired the North American Review) to 1908 (the year of Samuel Moffett's death), 11.4cm*14.5cm, near fine.
The letter reads as follows:
"Dear Col. Harvey,
I asked my nephew, Samuel Moffett, some time ago to write something for the North American & I promised to submit it to you & see if you wanted it.
The subject is all right - it is the question which is working its way to the front now - & I am partial enough to think it is a good paper. But you are the final court.

Hartford. Letter. Near Fine. A fine two-page handwritten letter on one side of two 5-1/2" x 8-3/4" sheets of paper SIGNED "Mark" to author Thomas Bailey Aldrich letting him know that he must cancel their plans for a visit by Aldrich and his wife to them due to Mrs. Clemens's health, going into detail about doctors and the health of his wife with a promise to reschedule. In part: "We are both grieved with this verdict, yet it was to be expected, for Mrs. Clemens's pulse ranged from 130 to 150 during one night & a part of two days, & consequently the consumption of her forces (considering the poverty of the stock in the first place), was necessarily very great.... This morning she developed a virulent quinsy --an odd thing to be glad about, & yet the gang of us were never gladder in our lives than when the physician delivered this news, for we had been feeling dead certain that the diptheria was back again & disaster hanging over us.... Being night-nurse, I must cut short & go on duty, now." Olivia… Read More
