Racine, [WI], 1852. Very good, one tear along fold, barely affecting text, occasional soiling, otherwise clean.. 1 sheet. 7.5 x 9.5. inches. Dated and signed August 14th, 1852 by Ellis M. Russell (1807-1866), a recent transplant to Racine Wisconsin from Vermont where he is traveling to settle up his affairs, writes about the coming election and express his confidence in Winfield Scott as the Whig Presidential candidate. "Men west are beginning seriously to feel the effects of this kind of free trade... We want a Tariff that is good for something. We want appropriations for Internal improvements. A.C. & will have it. Scott is the man for us. You know and feel it. He will carry Wisconsin without do[u]bt. Party lines are all being broken. Men will look to their interest anyhow."

His November 1888 address to the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society (summarized in Appendix 1 of this book; the original text of the speech is lost) prompted William Morris to found the Kelmscott Press. With Thomas James Cobden-Sanderson, Walker established the Doves Press in 1900, and Walker advised other fine presses as well. Printed receipt (5.5" by 8.5") acknowledging the sale of a gas iron from the Bolgiano Water Motor Company of Baltimore, Maryland, to the Hendrick Manufacturing Company of Carbondale, Pennsylvania. Depicts a clever water-powered sewing machine in upper left-hand corner of the receipt, powered by the company's proprietary water motor that "will run Sewing Machines, Fans, Scroll Saws, Coffee Mills, Lathes, Printing Presses, Grindstones, Ice Cream Freezers, Washing Machines, etc." (recto). A previous owner's name has been inked out on the first leaf; else an excellent copy. OCLC locates only one holding, at Virginia Tech. A recipe book for the then new and growing pastime of camping. All of these recipes make use of Klim dehydrated whole-milk powder. To make it more attractive to male consumers, the company chose seven famous adventurers to provide the recipes: Morris Ackerman, Charles S. Kirstead, James Tandy Ellis, W.H.H. Chamberlin, Harry C. Phibbs, George L. Catton, and Major Townsend Whelen. Includes a brief biography of each contributor. Klim was developed as a dehydrated whole-milk powder for use in the tropics, where ordinary milk tended to spoil quickly.
