About This Item

An Autograph Letter Signed (ALS) by Queen Camilla (then Camilla Parker Bowles), expressing her gratitude to Paul for his letter of support.

ALS. 2pp. on 1 folded sheet of Middlewick House headed notepaper, dated November 9th 1994, a single fold, near fine.

The letter reads as follows:

"Dear Paul,

Thank you so much for your very kind letter. It makes all the difference to me to receive letters from thoughtful people like yourself.

Thank goodness that you are sensible enough not to read the tabloids. They get away with such terrible lies, which we are powerless to do anything about.

Thank you again for your support.

Yours sincerely

Camilla Parker Bowles."

The ALS provides a unique insight into Queen Camilla's thoughts and feelings at this difficult moment in her life and relationship with King Charles. In June 1994, just a few months before the date of the letter, King Charles famously admitted to the relationship with Queen Camilla in a TV interview with Jonathan Dimbleby. After the interview, Queen Camilla was vilified in the UK tabloid press and the letter provides an insight into her feelings about their treatment of her. The month after the date of the letter, Queen Camilla and her then husband Andrew Parker Bowles started divorce proceedings. The divorce was finalised in March 1995.

An interesting subtlety with the letter can be observed in the sentence where Queen Camilla writes about the tabloid press: "They get away with such terrible lies, which we are powerless to do anything about." It appears that she initially wrote "which I am powerless to do anything about", and later changed to "which we are powerless to do anything about."
