About This Item

saying that "Mr Blair has written to say that he has... Mr F. Robertson to attend the meeting on Wednesday... I hope you will come and bring everyone you can...", 1 side 8vo., 24 Ennismore Gardens, S.W., 21st October no year Plumer had served in Egypt and in Matabeleland, north of the Transvaal. Before the outbreak of war in South Africa (11th October 1899) he was sent out to the Cape on special service, raising the Rhodesian field force or 'Irregulars', which he commanded during the early months of the war, and leading them to join Mahon in the relief of Mafeking (17th May 1900). In WWI, most of the other generals had a cavalry background, given to break-through charges, but Plumer, always thoughtful, well prepared and considerate, became known as the 'The Soldier's General'. He gained a signal victory at Messines in Flanders in 1917, and took a very prominent part later in the recovery of Belgium, being made Field Marshal, 1st Baron (later Viscount) and awarded £30,000.
