About This Item

(1777-1857, C-in-C Pacific 1841-1844), saying "You performed the very delicate task... with great tact & judgment", & congratulating him "as an old friend", with on sides 2 and 3, copies in Thomas' hand of two letters to him, in the first Mr. Pitt Adams, Chargé d'Affaires in Lima, writes "H.M. Govt. have entirely approved all our proceedings at Islay & Arica... I was ordered to renew as demands the proposals we made to the Supreme Junta at Arequipa... up to the last moment... Castilla... shewed the most strenuous resistance", he lists the British ships "at the ready..." but at length the Peruvian Government agreed "to every demand, including the apology... for the language used towards you by the Govr. of Islay", he refers to the same "cordial harmony" with Sir G. Seymour, Thomas' successor (23rd June 1845), in the second Consul-General Miller in Honolulu congratulates him on "not only the good will and affection of these Islanders, but... the entire approbation of Her Majesty's Government, which I think is... the most gratifying reward that a good Officer can aspire to" (20th May 1845), together 3 sides 8vo, note by Thomas on 4th side, Bishopsgate Cottage, Chertsey, Lima and Honolulu, 20th May - 20th August Thomas served under Codrington in 1811-1812, supporting the Spanish patriots on the coast of Catalonia. General Ramón Castilla, elected constitutional president on 20th April 1845, brought peace after a long power struggle among the generals who had fought for Peru's independence.
