About This Item
Autographed letter, signed. Letter reads:
"Dear Madam,
It gives me great pleasure to send you an autograph of my dear friend Charles Sumner.
I wish I had something more to send; but I have nothing.
I'm afraid that you may have been misled by a paragraph in the papers, stating that I was one of his executors. This is not the case. I am only one of the trustees to whose charge his papers have been left.
Thank you for your words of sympathy and for your true estimate of Sumner's character,
I am, Dear Madame,
Yours truly,
Henry W. Longfellow."
Includes clipped signature of Sumner and autographed envelope addressed by Longfellow to Mrs. E. Sumner, 107 East 26 Street, New York. Slight darkening to areas from supposed newspaper clipping. Sumner's autograph has some pinholes (see image).
Cambridge, March 18, 1874.
Letter is 4.5 x 7 inches; unfolds to 9 x 7 inches.
