Large, heavy folio, first edition, unpaginated with 284 duotone plates, some double-page, brown cloth boards with pink and orange lettering on spine and upper panel, duotone portrait of the author mounted on lower panel, clear acetate dust jacket, two page introduction by Avedon, photographic index. This book resembles the Avedon books designed by Alexy Brodovitch, but other designers are credited here. Condition of this book: Jacket has a short tear at bottom of spine, with creases and wrinkles, all else fine. Size: Large Folio (bigger than A3). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing. Synopsis

RICHARD AVEDON (b. 1923) was the editor, with his classmate James Baldwin, of The Magpie , the literary magazine at De Witt Clinton High School in the Bronx.  In 1942 he joined the photography department of the U.S. merchant marine.  He was a staff photographer at I>Harper's Bazaar (1951-1965) and Vogue (1966-1988), and he collaborated with James Baldwin on Nothing Personal (1964), a book about the civil rights movement.  In 1992 he became the first staff photographer at The New Yorker .
