About This Item

London: Martin Secker, 1931. Book. Near Fine. Hardcover. 2nd Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 2nd edition, having a preface by Douglas, but with the text unaltered, 1931. 7 3/8" x 5 3/8", xiv, 340 pages. Lord Alfred Douglas (1870-1945) was a poet, magazine editor and writer. He befriended Oscar Wilde in a relationship which was seen as illegal in Britain at the time, and wrote several books about the friendship. He was editor of the magazine 'The Academy' before serving time in jail for libel. Later editions of this book were entitled 'My Friendship with Oscar Wilde; The Autobiography of Lord Alfred Douglas', presumably for a market less aware of Douglas's association with the notorious Oscar Wilde. Signed Brian Fothergill on front free endpaper; Brian Fothergill (1921 - 1990) was a biographer who had a particular empathy for those on the margins of history. Hb, no dw, in original blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine and upper board; spine lettering rather darkened, otherwise a near fine copy. .
