New York: Random House,, 1993. First edition, limited issue for Whitney Fellows, no. 55 of 250 copies signed and numbered by the photographer on the inside of the lid of the box, with 2 engraver's proof photographs, one of Jean Shrimpton (Paris 1970) and one of Jasper Johns (New York City 1965), loosely inserted in paper folders as issued. Published to coincide with the exhibition "Richard Avedon: Evidence 1944-1994" at the Whitney Museum of American Art, 24 March - 26 June, 1994. Avedon's photographic autobiography ranges from his earliest private pictures to the snapshots of stars that made his name. His "fashion and portrait photographs helped define America's image of style, beauty, and culture for the last half-century" (New York Times obituary). It has been reported that only about 100 copies of this edition was published. Two vols. quarto. Original beige cloth, lettering to front covers in red and blue. Housed in a beige cloth clamshell box, lettering to front cover blindstamped. With 284 full page photographic illustrations throughout. All in fine condition.

Synopsis

RICHARD AVEDON (b. 1923) was the editor, with his classmate James Baldwin, of The Magpie , the literary magazine at De Witt Clinton High School in the Bronx.  In 1942 he joined the photography department of the U.S. merchant marine.  He was a staff photographer at I>Harper's Bazaar (1951-1965) and Vogue (1966-1988), and he collaborated with James Baldwin on Nothing Personal (1964), a book about the civil rights movement.  In 1992 he became the first staff photographer at The New Yorker .
