About This Item
Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1885. First edition of this collection of James novellas. Octavo, original green cloth, gilt titles to the spine. In very good condition. A nice example. Henry James was particularly interested in the short narrative form of fiction and produced dozens of what he called the "beautiful and blest nouvelle". Originally published in English Illustrated Magazine in 1884, The Author of Beltraffio is the macabre account of the demise of an isolated and troubled English family told through the eyes of a somewhat naive American narrator.
Synopsis
The wife of a successful author fears the influence her husband's writing will have on their son. [Note: It is commonly suggested that Henry James' suspected homosexuality is evidenced in the subplot of this story.]
