Redefining the organization of the French government, citizenship and the limits to the powers of government, The short-lived French Constitution of 1791 was the first written constitution in France, created after the collapse of the Absolute Monarchy of the Ancien RŽgime. One of the basic precepts of the revolution was adopting constitutionality and establishing popular sovereignty, following the steps of the United States of America and Poland. This Constitution was presented to Louis XVI in September, just four months ago his unsuccessful flight to Varennes. He and his wife were arrested in August 1792 remained in captivity until their death by the guillotine on 21 January 1793 (the King) and 16 October 1793 (Marie Antoinette).
