About This Item

1690. Paris, Chez Antoine Dezallier, 1690. 12mo. First edition. xxv,(2),615,(1)pp. Eighteenth century French mottled calf, fully gilt spine, head and foot of spine chipped, small areas of leather loss on both bds, otherwise a good copy. Armorial bookplate Bibliothèque de Mouchy. Baillet was, from 1680 to his death, librarian to M. de Lamoignon, advocat-general to the parlement of Paris, of whose library he produced a manuscript catalogue raisonné in 35 folio volumes. It seems ironic that one should need to cosult Barbier to discover the author of this pioneering work, but the effort is rewarding, for here we read that - Cet ouvrage [était] le premier publié en France sur ce genre de recherches bibliographiques. The subject is approached from various angles, the psychology of pseudonymity, the various types of cognomes etc. This was a preliminary treatise, which should have been followed by a Recueil des Auteurs Déguisés but unfortunately the author died in 1706 leaving his work unfinished, and it was not for another 100 years, with the publication of Barbier's Dictionnaire des Ouvrages Anonymes in 1806, that the project was finally completed. In his preface Barbier pays eloquent tribute to the erudition of his predecessor. --------------------------- First edition of the earliest French work on pseudonyms. "In 1690 Adrien Baillet (1649 - 1706) published his Auteurs deguisez... A list of nearly 1,700 identifications of pseudonyms accompanied this extensive and very interesting discussion. Unconsciously, Baillet adopted in this list a new procedure that has had many imitators... Aprosio's Visiera alzata and Baillet's Auteurs deguisez are the first great contributions to the study of cryptonyms by librarians." (Taylor & Mosher, The Bibliographical History of Anonyma and Pseudonyma, pp. 115-116). Baillet was librarian to M. de Lamoignon, avocat général of the Parlement de Paris. Baillet's bibliographical activities left him no time to change his clothes or to eat more than one meal a day.

About Knuf Rare Books

Knuf Rare books was founded in the 1950s by Frits Knuf in the Netherlands.  After an apprenticeship with Frits I took over the firm in 1996 which we then moved to France in 2001 where we are still based. The business is run from our home in Lavardin, one of the most beautiful villages of France located  in the Loire Valley, that can easily be reached from Paris. Visitors are most welcome, but by appointment please. I am interested in the History of the Book and have a good inventory of rare and uncommon printed books, ephemeral items, prints and manuscripts from the incunable period to the twentieth century. My stock is especially strong in early auction- and library catalogues, type specimens, continental printer’s and engravers manuals, calligraphy manuals. Another interest is early continental architecture books and early art auction catalogues. Every year I issue two fully illustrated and annotated printed catalogues that are sent out upon request. In addition to that I also send out short email lists every week with a selection of books about books from our stock. And of course, I exhibit at several major international book fairs, such as New York, Boston and Paris. We work mainly with institutional customers, and are happy to discuss special institutional requirements. I adhere strictly to the professional standards and code of conduct of the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers and the Syndicat national de la Librairie Ancienne et Moderne (SLAM),  and the Compagnie Nationale des Experts (CNE) to which I belong. I have been an international rare book dealer for over 25 years and am a member of the Nederlands Genootschap van Bibliofielen. If you want to buy or sell single books or whole collections, have an expert valuation or if would just like some advice, please do not hesitate to contact me.
