About This Item

New York: Vanguard Press, 1957. First Edition of a new play based on the novel by Patrick Dennis. Presentation inscription "For Mom, one of the wonderful people of the world. Happy Birthday. Love, Jerry. 1962". Our research reveals "Mom" to be the mother of Lon McCallister (popular movie star in the 1940s & 50s); his friends always referred to her as "Mom". 8vo. 182 pp. Photographic endpapers; 2 photographic plates. Foreword by Parick Dennis. A near fine copy in 1/4 black cloth over paper covered boards with 'Auntie Mame' flamboyantly embossed on front cover; silver lettering on spine; in publisher's red, white and black illustrated dustjacket (fading to spine; some rubbing to covers). The play debuted to much acclaim in New York with Rosalind Russell as 'Mame' (subsequent 'Mames' include Greer Garson, Beatrice Lillie (play), Angela Lansbury and Lucille Ball).
