About This Item

London: John Baker Publishers , 1966. Reproduced and printed offset litho. Original title: 'Aubrey Beardsley: An essay with a preface' (1898). Arthur Symons's memoir and critical estimation of the work of Aubrey Beardsley was originally published shortly after the artist's death. It was Arthur Symons, it will be recalled, who started the short-lived 'Savoy', entlisting the services of Beardsley after the latter had severed his connection with 'The Yello Book'. With 16 plates. Aubrey Vincent Beardsley (1872 - 1898) was an English illustrator and author. His drawings in black ink, and influenced by the style of Japanese woodcuts, emphasized the grotesque, the decadent, and the erotic. He was a leading figure in the Aesthetic movement which also included Oscar Wilde and James A. McNeill Whistler. Beardsley's contribution to the development of the Art Nouveau and poster styles was significant, despite the brevity of his career before his early death from tuberculosis. Arthur William Symons (1865 - 1945), was a British poet, critic and magazine editor. 63 pag. . 1st edition. Cloth with pictorial dustjacke. Good copy.. 22,5cmx14,5cm.
